Marble Tile Facts

Marble installation in your home will substantially increase its value. The choice of a good quality and a popular color will place it high on the resale list. Don’t forget that marble will require an extra step or two, to keep it looking brand new. When you select marble, it is an investment and your choices will be permanent. So, it will have to be the right one. Avoid buying what may seem to be bargain deals on marble tile, even if the color or name is the one you want.
Before you buy check the following:

  1. Cracks on the surface or within the grain.
  2. Uneven surfaces within the tile itself. This is referred to as off-caliber; the edges may be thinner than the center of the tile.
  3. The tiles may be out of square. The corners may not be ninety degrees.
  4. The tiles can be concave- a bowing in the middle.
  5. The tiles may be too thin for floor application.
  6. Unacceptable spots or discolorations on the surface of the tile

The above issues present tremendous installation issues, so, be diligent.

Most people see marble in their home as a symbol of opulence, and accomplishment. When they buy it, it is something they really want.
Marble is available in a wide range of colors and sizes. Standard sizes are 12 x 12, 16 x 16 and 18 x 18 inches. Smaller sizes can be cut from these standard sizes as required.
As with all natural stone surface materials, extended or heavy use can result in a dulling of the shine. Metal shoe tips or heels or sand and gravel from the outside can cause a severe marring of floors. For shower walls it can be soap scum or body oils.

Marring on countertops could occur from acids in fruits, cooking oils, wines,  soft drinks or cool aid  super glue or just plain heavy use.
You can fight back with a renewed polishing and sealing to bring the stone back to its original luster.
Shower walls, counter tops and floors can be made to look like new with a visit from the local floor specialist. Find it in your local directory under Natural Stone Restoration, Maintenance and Repair.

Before you buy, pick up or order samples. If you can have a look at more than one sample, you will get a better view of what you final surface will be. Make sure the retailer has the quantity you need in the same lot your sample is from.
